Apple’s much rumoured iPad Mini will be a 7in Retina Display tablet out this October. This comes from a source of iMore who also claims the price will be a meager US$200-250.

With Apple swimming in its own sea of cash, and a need for a similar control of the iPad market that it managed with the MP3 market, it may even sell the iPad Mini for a meager profit.

The source indicated that the 7in iPad would be identical to the 9.7in current iPad, meaning a 2048×1536 resolution in a 7in screen – delivering an iPad beating 365ppi. We’re taking this with a handful of salt, but the 8GB (only) 7in iPad Mini in October would be a very welcome pre-Christmas present.

HTML5 is being received so enthusiastically by businesses in particular. The latest version can perform all kinds of dynamic tasks and visual tricks. The web is progressing faster now than it has in a long time.

“A simple example would be taking an attachment from your desktop and dragging it into the compose window in Gmail. That’s a basic capability that you couldn’t do five years ago because web browsers didn’t support it.”

HTML5 also represents another step to the “semantic web”, a web structure championed by Tim Berners-Lee that cross-references, reacts to and displays multiple information sources from the internet in real time.

Companies favour HTML5 because it can also replicate experiences previously only available inside an app, on the web. This is especially true for the mobile environment.

This is a trend that is likely to snowball within months.

mypsdtohtml.com converts your design into HTML 5 in 24 hours.

Spotify is late to the tablet game — its competitors, which include MOG, Rhapsody and Rdio — have all had iPad or Android tablet apps in the market for months. So what took so long?
“We wanted to make sure we got the app just right,” Spotify told us while showing off the app.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is scheduled to appear on TV on Tuesday to introduce a feature that “could save lives.”

The social networking giant has introduced tools of late that could be described along the same lines. In December, Facebook launched a program called “Lifeline” that let friends alert the company when their friends express suicidal thoughts. In that case, Facebook sends an email to the comment’s author directing them to a telephone hotline or a link they can click to start a confidential chat.

What do you think Facebook is going to introduce?

At the recent Fuorisalone event, a design expo held in Milan, Ikea gave out branded cameras in its press kit to media attendees. The simplistic cardboard camera has built-in memory that can store up to 40 digital photos. It’s powered by two AA-sized batteries and has a pull-out USB connector so you can transfer the photos to your computer. Once you’ve reached 40 photos, you can wipe out the internal memory and start over again.

Ikea’s disposable camera probably won’t be able to handle the wear and tear of ordinary cameras, but it’s certainly a nifty gadget for a branded merchandise.

Hootsuite is expanding its App Directory, adding support for MailChimp, Chime.in, Identi.ca, Vision Critical Surveys, and RSS Reader. The new apps are available starting Tuesday for all 4 million of HootSuite’s Free, Pro and Enterprise clients.

“Businesses today are social. Success depends on connecting with customers instantly across multiple social media channels and networks. The growth of our App Directory gives clients an impressive arsenal of tools to do this, all in a single place,” says HootSuite CEO Ryan Holmes. “Our goal, as we close in on six million users by end of year, is to continue aggressively integrating leading apps, turning our dashboard into the mother of all SaaS resources for the social business.”

Google has come out with another one of its doodles today, paying homage to one Gideon Sundback — the engineer who developed the zipper. Sundback was born on this day 132 years ago, an occasion that Google has appropriately commemorated with a giant zipper running length-wise down its homepage. Users can “unzip” the page by dragging their cursors from top to bottom, which will bring up a bevy of search items related to today’s honoree.
